Welcome to the Health Sciences program web page! My name is Melissa Smith and I am proud to say that I have been the instructor since our program started in 2000. I love teaching high school students about the awesome opportunities in health care and training them for the numerous jobs available in our area. My teaching goals include career readiness for all students with an emphasis on developing social skills, leadership, personal integrity and self confidence. These skills are promoted in my classroom and through participation in HOSA club activities. 

I am a 1984 graduate of Metcalfe County High School. While attending MCHS in the early 80's, I was very active in extracurriular activites including BETA club, FHA, Chorus/Drama, Cheerleading, Powderpuff Football, and numerous other activities. I believe being involved in school activities gives students a since of belonging and a reason to look forward to coming to school everyday. I believe in the importance of a meaningful education. Knowledge and skills training should be learned in combination with learning positive personal characterisitcs and team skills so that our students can get jobs easily and hold on to them. I want our graduates to be good people, productive citizens so that our community remains strong.  

As an WKU alumni, I earned my nursing degree in 1993 and a B.S. in Vocational Eduacation in 2006. I carried my school spirit with me to WKU and was a Topper Cheerleader. I currently serve as the MCHS cheerleading coach , HOSA club sponsor and PROM coordinator. 

Our Health Sciences program offers 3 career certifications for ambitious students who are seeking something more than a diploma upon graduation. As a state registered nurse aide, pharmacy technician or phlebotomist, dedicated students have the opportunity to graduate high school with career certifications that can provide them with gainful employment and a competitive edge as they begin their new journey in life. We want to help you make that transition with ease.
