Metcalfe Students Win at STLP State Championship

The 11th annual STLP State Championship brought together nearly 14,000 students and educators to celebrate technology and learning. More than 500 schools from more than 100 districts competed in more than 40 educational technology-related categories.

 

The Hornet News Network placed Top-Ten Runner Up in the Projects category. The team of Brody Hurt (7th grade), Ethan Bates (11th grade), Dillon Syra (11th grade), and Leah Thompson (12th grade) competed against 600 other projects.

Metcalfe County Middle School’s STLP team won Best in Level 2 Group Projects for its “Space Break.” Colton Huffman, Hunner Whitlow, and Jack Costello (all 8th graders) created an escape room and digital escape games that finished in the top 27 of 200 projects. This is the first time in nearly a decade that MCMS STLP has made it to Level 3 judging and won that award.

MCHS seniors Dakota Tiller and Ethan White placed in the top 6 of the STLP State Bench Challenge. The competition consisted of a 50 question exam and a one-hour computer troubleshooting session.

Metcalfe County High School senior Austin Turner, a state STLP engineer, was recognized as part of the Service Team. Service team members work throughout the STLP State Championship to bring live support and coverage to the event.

Cody Chapman and Jacob Miller (both seniors) competed in the SumoBot competition. They designed their own robot and competed against rival robots from across the state. Cody and Jacob finished 2-2. And, MCHS senior Taylor Brown submitted a music composition, and he was named a state semi-finalist.Cody Chapman and Jacob Miller

 

Other students who competed from MCHS were Lucas Firkins, Tyler Brown, Laura Carter, Alex Trotter, and Alex Baker.

MCMS students Destiny Stephens, Breanna Haskins, Miranda Branham, Brittany Smith, Brooklyn Green, Jonathan Carver, Cabot Boling, Rebecca Petranek, Ben Welsh, and Daniel Shirley also competed in the STLP State Championship.
