Superintendent Selected for Metcalfe County Schools

The Metcalfe County Board of Education met in Special-Called Session on Tuesday evening. The only item on the agenda was to approve selection of Metcalfe County School Superintendent. Dr. Benny Lile will begin his contract as Superintendent of Metcalfe County Schools on July 1, 2013. Dr. Lile is a graduate of Metcalfe County High School, and is currently employed as Director of Instruction and Technology at Barren County Schools.<br />
<br />
"I began teaching at North Metcalfe Elementary 28 years ago, and had a really great experience there," Dr. Lile said on Tuesday evening in an interview with WCLU Radio. I've now been in the Barren County School System for 19 years, and have enjoyed that. There have been some wonderful people. It will be good to be serving the students of Metcalfe County again."<br />
<br />
Dr. Lile continued, "There are obviously a lot of challenges with the resources and the financial environment we're faced with, but there's always a place for creativity - a place for good old-fashioned elbow grease. There's always a time to see young people and a smile on their face, and knowing that you're part of working together as a team that can provide newer and greater opportunities for them."

SSE Students Get Surprise Visit from Navy

In guidance this past month students have been working with Guidance Counselor Mielle Distefano on identifying a college and/or career they would like to pursue in the future. They wrote a letter to their college or career choice and requested information. Last week, Ryder and Michael received their information hand-delivered from U.S. Navy Petty Officer First Class Nuke Coordinator Devin O'Brien! As you can see, they were very excited to get their information hand-delivered to them. They will be talking about this for a very long time!

MCHS Student Develops Skills at Local Business

Daylon Murphy, a senior at Metcalfe County High School, is developing valuable work skills at Kentucky Blueberry Growers Association in Edmonton. Daylon trains there a few hours each week during school through the Community-Based Work Transition Program (CBWTP), which is affiliated with Vocational Rehabilitation.<br />
<br />
Students who qualify for the CBWTP program participate during their last two years of high school. The student’s junior year is spent job- shadowing at participating businesses in the community and trying to decide what type of job is most appealing to them. During their senior year, students get a chance to actually train at a specific site with the goal of employment after graduation.<br />
<br />
Daylon shadowed several places in Edmonton, and Kentucky Blueberry Growers Association appeared to be a possible site of employment for him, and he has been training there since August 2012. Daylon says, “It is one of the best experiences I’ve had in high school.”

MCHS Seniors: College & Career Ready!

Seniors at Metcalfe County High School have been preparing for life after high school. In English class students were required to research their future career choice, then create a step-by- step plan of how they were going to obtain certification, licensing, or meet the job requirements. In this chart students calculated expenses of attending post-secondary school or training, meeting specific requirements for the job, and potential first year earnings. Students then had to explain their plans to the class.<br />
<br />
Next students put their real-world writing skills to work. They prepared a cover letter for the job they hope to obtain. They then completed a resume and secured at least three references for the potential job. Students will continue honing skills needed for the workplace as we plan the mock job interviews that will be conducted in April.<br />
<br />
Over the past two years many volunteers have helped host a real job interviewing experience for the graduating class. If you or your business would like to help please contact Eric Sexton or Lynn Hawkins at Metcalfe County High School.

North Metcalfe Elementary Kindergarten Student Landon Heckel issued a challenge to the fifth grade class at NME earlier this week to read 100 books by week’s end. As a reward for doing so, Heckel stated fifth grade would get to play a game of kickball with his Kindergarten class. The fifth grade class accepted the challenge, and in turn challenged the Kindergarten class to read 10 books of their own by the end of the week. Fifth grade students finished reading their 100 books on Thursday, and then paired up with Kindergarten students to help read the 10 books in their challenge. The fifth grade class and the kindergarten class were recognized on Friday for their achievements and sportsmanship through this challenge, and the kickball game will be played during school next week!

February 17 through 23 is Gifted Education Week

                The Metcalfe County School District celebrates Gifted Education Week February 17-23, 2013. Gifted students are recognized across the state during this week. Gifted students are identified in five areas: intellectual, specific aptitude, leadership, creativity, and visual and performing arts. The goal of Metcalfe County Schools is to design the best educational program for each and every student to ensure continuous progress. This requires additional effort and planning for our most capable students in Metcalfe County Schools.

The program design includes Primary Talent Pool (K-3) and Formal Identification (4-12). The curriculum designed for these students include creative and critical thinking, problem solving, acceleration, advanced classes, independent study, and collaboration. These are six of the fifteen service delivery options provided by the district.

At the elementary level, students receive instruction from the gifted educator as least once each week. During this time, differentiated services are provided and matched to individual needs, interests, and abilities of students. The gifted instructor also collaborates with classroom teachers to provide multiple service delivery options to accommodate the Primary Talent Pool and formally identified 4th and 5th grade gifted and talented students. Visual Arts students receive additional instruction with the art teacher weekly. Each month, all 4th and 5th grade gifted and talented students meet for TAG Team. This is a whole day of instruction that provides students with the opportunity to work together to achieve goals. The goals of the TAG Team consist of:

Students will think critically and solve problems.

Students will have discussions and be actively engaged in learning experiences with like-minded students from other schools.

Students will participate monthly in a full day of enrichment in all content areas.

In the middle school students are pulled out for special instruction by a gifted educator one time each week. Collaboration and co-teaching is provided by the regular teacher and gifted educator. Advanced math classes are taught in sixth, seventh, and eighth grades. Art students have nine weeks of instruction with an art teacher. Leadership opportunities are provided by Student Government Organization, Beta, and Team Leadership. Sixth graders have TAG (Talented and Gifted) Day five times during the school year.

At the high school level high potential students take APP and AP classes in English, Math, Science, Biology, Chemistry, U.S. and World History. The gifted educator collaborates and co-teaches in most of these classes. The Team Leadership Program and other clubs provide opportunities for students to develop leadership skills.

The Academic Team is very active in Middle and High School. The various areas of the academic competition include: Quick Recall, Future Problem Solving, Composition, and tests in Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies.

The administrators, counselors, teachers, parents, gifted educators, and community leaders work to provide the best educational experiences for our high potential learners, The goal of Metcalfe County Schools is to ensure continuous progress for our gifted students district wide.

Arrests Made Following County-Wide Schools Bomb Threat

Today, January 17, 2013, at approximately 7:30 a.m., two female juveniles, a 15-year-old and a 16-year-old, were arrested by the Edmonton Police Department and Metcalfe County Sheriff’s Department following a bomb threat made against all Metcalfe County Schools on Wednesday, January 16. The quick arrests are credited to the hard work of the school administration, Edmonton Police Department, Metcalfe County Sheriff’s office, Kentucky State Police, Court Designated Worker, Office of Emergency Management and Metcalfe County Attorney’s office. <br />
<br />
Following the bomb threat on Wednesday, Kentucky State Police and school administration searched all Metcalfe County school buildings in Edmonton, while North Metcalfe Volunteer Fire Department and Summer Shade Volunteer Fire Department search their respective schools with the assistance of school administration. The all-clear was given for all Metcalfe County school facilities on Wednesday afternoon. All school facilities are secured and student safety was never compromised during or as a result of the threat. On behalf of the Metcalfe County Board of Education, we thank these individuals for their professionalism.

Spring 2012 Test Results

                Beginning Friday, November 2, 2012, school stakeholders will have access to overall public school and district data, and soon parents will have the opportunity to view their child’s individual results from state tests taken last spring. This is the first year Kentucky schools will report scores based on the new assessment and accountability system, “Unbridled Learning: College & Career Readiness for All.” The academic standards are more rigorous, but the future result will be students better prepared for college and the workplace.

Scores reported will range from 0-100 (different from the 0-140 range from the former CATS system), and school or district achievement will be determined by student performance in three to five components, determined by their school level. After a school’s score is calculated, schools and districts will then be labeled into four overall categories: Distinguished, Proficient, or Needs Improvement. Recognition for achievements will be awarded to the highest performing schools, or schools showing great progress, and consequence categories will be used to classify schools not meeting their goals.

When first glancing at the results, it will appear the results are much lower than last year. Please keep the following in mind:

These results cannot be compared to previous results, since we are assessing students on a different standard. The previous standard was basic proficiency on math and reading. The new standard is college and career readiness.

We made the change to college and career readiness due to the competitive global economy that was the basis of 2009’s Senate Bill 1, which required KDE and the Kentucky Board of Education to provide new standards and assessments that are internationally benchmarked.

The results of the Kentucky assessments are more closely aligned to results from the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP). Those results report proficiency at a much higher level than most state tests. Being proficient on NAEP is similar to our new college- and career-ready proficiency. One could say that proficiency on NAEP and the new K-PREP is similar to getting a B or B+ and being advanced/distinguished is similar to an A.

The new Unbridled Learning system has provided schools with more rigorous academic standards and a plan for continuous improvement. School & district data will be available on the School Report Card, located in the Kentucky Department of Education’s Open House Portal: www.openhouse.education.ky.gov.

The goal for Metcalfe County Schools is to ensure students graduate prepared for their future with college/career readiness skills.

SSE Leaders of the Month

                The Leader of the Month recognition at Summer Shade Elementary goes to a student in each grade who has exhibited responsibility.

The Preschool class is proud to honor Jake Edwards as Leader of the Month. He earns this award by showing that he is a very responsible person and a good role model for others. Jake shows that he is responsible by following teachers’ directions, working hard on classroom projects, and by helping his classmates both in and out of the classroom. He can be trusted to run an errand to the office and return to the room without the teacher checking on him. He also takes care of his personal belongings as well as his own self well-being.

Preslie Acree is the Kindergarten Leader of the Month for October. Preslie is always trying to do her best. She is accountable for her choices. Preslie thinks before she acts or says things. That is why Preslie Acree is the pick for the character trait Responsibility.

Jazzlynn Reagan is a responsible person. Jazzlynn has made it a point to obey all rules and expectations set forth in the classroom and around school since the first day she was here. Her grandmother also reports that she reads extra amounts aloud to her as a bedtime routine, proving that Jazzlynn not only feels responsible for her behavior, yet also her personal learning. Above this, Jazzlynn knows and shares her definition of responsibility: "Responsibility means to have self-control and control what you do!" Jazzlynn is a person who knows the true meaning of responsibility and is our Leader of the Month in first grade.

The October Leader of the Month for second grade is Dawn-Marie Nesbitt. She is a perfect example of responsibility. She always has her homework done and never loses things she is asked to keep up with. She goes to reading groups and specials prepared to do her best. Dawn-Marie also stands up for what is right and takes responsibility for her actions, even when she makes a poor choice. We are so proud to name Dawn-Marie as our Leader of the Month for the character trait Responsibility.

The third grade Leader of the Month is Dakota Shaw. Dakota shows responsibility at school by completing his homework and turning it in on time as well as taking responsibility for his behavior here at school! He takes responsibility at home by being a role model to his little brothers and demonstrating leadership in his home. When he has failed to follow a rule, he owns up to his mistakes and does what he needs to do to correct it.

The fourth grade Leader of the Month who best exhibits the character trait of responsibility is William Philpott. He understands and accepts the consequences for his actions and always works hard to try to correct his mistakes. William always completes his assignments and tasks in a timely manner and to the best of his ability without saying, "I can't" or "I give up," no matter how frustrated he may be. William is always the first to offer a helping hand to others in need, and takes on the responsibility of being a positive role model for his fellow classmates and younger students at SSE!

The fifth grade Leader of the Month that exhibits the characteristic of responsibility is Elizabeth Decker. A responsible student is considered honest, reliable and can be trusted with important tasks or matters; all characteristics in which Elizabeth exhibits. Elizabeth takes great pride and responsibility for her learning and goes above and beyond to ensure her success in and out of school.

Co-Teaching works tremendously in Mrs. Kelly Shaw’s 6th period collaborative Biology class. With so many hands-on labs, projects, and learning activities, students are always learning in new and creative ways. During this class, students are studying Carbon Chemistry and creating several models Carbohydrates, Lipids, and Proteins utilizing PlayDoh. The students were able to apply what they had previously learned to make their models and demonstrate their understanding as Mrs. Shaw and Mrs. Lobb assessed their creations. Learning is rigorous at our school, and this is just another great snapshot of it at its best! <br />

Mrs. Tara Landrum’s third grade class at Summer Shade Elementary gave a thumbs-up for Lane Goodwin, a 13-year-old from Beech Grove who was diagnosed in March with alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma – a rare and aggressive cancer that affects just 1 in a million children. More than 100,000 people have joined the thumbs-up encouragement for Lane, which now includes students from Summer Shade Elementary. These third grade students wish to let Lane know that he has their support and thoughts as he continues to fight.

MCMS Students of the Week

John Bolt was named MCMS 6th Grade Student of the Week last week. John is always the first into class and is ready to work. He always has a smile on his face, never disrupts class, and is kind to everyone. He gives 110% in everything he does. He shows improvement every week with his reading and quizzes.<br />
<br />
Last week’s MCMS 7th Grade Student of the Week was Kennedy Bates. Kennedy is a very hard-working individual and always shows respect toward peers and adults. Her teacher says she is a delight to have in class!<br />
<br />
Kyle Comer was last week’s 8th Grade Student of the Week at MCMS. Kyle maintains good grades, plays football, and is in Student Government. However, what puts Kyle above other students in his grade is his compassion for his classmates. Kyle always includes students in his group that are not generally included. Kyle’s teacher says she has seen Kyle choose to work with students over his friends because they asked him first.

Community Education offers Workshop: There’s An App For That!

                Metcalfe County Schools Community Education announces its first workshop for students, parents, and the community.

On Tuesday, October 16, a workshop, "There’s an App for That," will be offered at the new Center for College & Career Readiness in the Enrichment Center on Industrial Drive.

This workshop will focus on applications that are designed for Apple iOS devices (such as iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad) as well as Google Android phones.

The number of apps available for these devices is increasing every day, and it can be difficult to distinguish what app best fits your needs.

Lauri Perkins, MCS Director of Instructional Technology & Innovation, will provide helpful hints to help you search apps and find the one that fits you. She will also take time to explore a few apps that may help manage your time and money, as well as educational apps for you and your children.

There is no registration or admission charge for the event. The workshop will begin at 4:30 p.m., and participants should bring their own mobile devices.

Those who are looking to upgrade to a smart device are welcome to attend, as well. The workshop will provide time for you to ask questions which may help you decide whether a smart device is right for you.

For more information about this workshop or Community Education, you may contact Director Justin Hubbard at 270-590-4498 or via email at justin.hubbard@metcalfe.kyschools.us.

Local Veteran Receives High School Diploma

More than 60 years after WWII broke out, the Kentucky legislature passed House Bill 45 authorizing school districts to issue high school diplomas to veterans whose high school education was interrupted by the global conflict. The 2004 General Assembly passed House Bill 113 which authorized diplomas for veterans who served during the Korean War. Further, HB 230 passed during the 2005 session authorizing diplomas for Vietnam veterans.<br />
<br />
During the rescheduled meeting of the Metcalfe County Board of Education on Monday, September 24, Veteran William Allen Cook received his high school diploma through this program. The Board recognized Cook for his service to his country, and Chairman Joey Shive presented the diploma as Cook received a standing ovation. <br />
<br />
Veterans of World War II, the Korean War, or the Vietnam War who have not received their High School diplomas may apply for theirs through the Kentucky Department of Veterans Affairs. Information and an application may be found at <a href="http://veterans.ky.gov/otherprograms/diploma.htm" target="_blank" >http://veterans.ky.gov/otherprograms/diploma.htm</a>.

Schools Host HOSS Program

The Kentucky Crime Prevention Coalition visited Metcalfe County Middle School last Tuesday and Metcalfe County High School last Wednesday to present the Hands On Student Simulation (HOSS) program. The program sets up stations in school gymnasiums, giving students the opportunity to attempt different tasks while wearing Fatal Vision glasses. The glasses simulate a person’s vision while under the influence of alcohol. Stations included driving a course on a mobility scooter, shooting basketball, and participating in a field sobriety test. The intent of the program is to show students that it is not a wise or safe decision to get into a car with anyone after they have been drinking.

SSE Students Study Native American Culture

The 5th grade class at Summer Shade Elementary has been studying Native American culture. Students researched their Native's region to address what natural elements were present in the early 1200's. Afterward, students created displays depicting the environment using only natural resources. Students then taught their peers about their tribe’s culture and even administered an assessment they created. This unit allowed students to identify an early American culture and describe interaction between different early American groups in the history of the U.S.

Edmonton Elementary School has partnered with TRAX Running in Bowling Green to form Kids Run EES; a running club for EES students from Kindergarten to fifth grade. Over fifteen teachers and staff members are heading to the Edmonton Memorial Park after school on Thursday to run with over forty EES runners. The club members ride a school bus to the park where they participate in a program that will help them gain the skills and strength to run a 1 mile or 5K (3.1 miles) run. TRAX is providing the running program and is also providing shirts and water bottles for the club members. Club sponsor, Mrs. Kara Ford, would like to thank TRAX for sponsoring the club, Lilly Wheat (from TRAX) for providing a training program and running with the group, all of the teachers and staff at EES and other MCS staff members who help make running club successful, MCS Transportation for providing student transportation to the park, and the parent volunteers who help supervise and motivate our runners!

MCHS Students Soar Toward New Heights!

Last fall, Metcalfe County High School introduced an aviation program for students through an application process using special criteria. MCHS principal Kelly Bell asked Career Coach Eric Sexton if he would be interested in facilitating the program. Sexton’s first thought… I can’t fly! However, upon researching the program offered through the KIAE (Kentucky Institute of Aerospace Education) Sexton soon learned offering aviation was a realistic possibility that would provide students a fresh, unique approach to learning. Sexton and MCHS Guidance Counselor Jessica Miles traveled to Frankfort, KY, to meet Dr. Tim Smith of Frankfort High School’s Aviation Academy. Dr. Smith, a pioneer for aviation education in the high school setting, provided MCHS with an abundance of information, resources and all the tools necessary to begin an aviation program. At that point Metcalfe County High School became one of 12 schools in the state to become part of this exclusive network.<br />
<br />
The 2011-12 school year has been trial and error for the MCHS Aviation Program. Mrs. Miles and Mr. Sexton assisted students in completing Aero Scholars, which is an on-line based fundamentals course. Flight simulators were purchased through special grant funds and students attended the State aviation conference in the fall of 2011. In the spring semester students began a second course through Aero Scholars, continued with flight simulation and started working on a Skills USA Aviation Contest. The final piece of the semester was the Wing Design Challenge. KIAE provided each school in their network a RC flyer kit to build a wing and make it fly. While MCHS did not get to participate in the competition due to schedule conflicts, MCHS students did get to take their wing out to fly. Glasgow native and RC flyer enthusiast, Sam Chambers assisted MCHS students in the wing design challenge. With his expertise students were able to engage in the process of engineering and flying a radio-controlled airplane. Mr. Chambers volunteered his time to help our students one afternoon each week during the spring semester to build the wing. In May, Mr. Sexton and two students traveled to Glasgow’s RC Field and meet with Mr. Chambers to take the inaugural flight. It was a great experience for the students to see what their hard work accomplished. Mr. Chambers even allowed them to man the radio controls.<br />
<br />
So what’s next? With one year underway, MCHS is proud to offer this program to more students as we build the aviation program. Through the resources of the KIAE, career pathways in science, technology, engineering and mathematics are made possible ensuring additional opportunities for our students to be college or career ready. Student’s who complete the program as designed, are eligible to set for their private pilot’s license exam. Additionally, the MCHS aviation program will soon partner with an area airport to provide co-op type experiences for upper level students and further opportunity to explore the field of aviation. And lastly, the KIAE network is excited to announce dual credit offerings through EKU (Eastern Kentucky University). This year, new MCHS faculty member, Henry Damron, has taken the reigns as facilitator of the MCHS Aviation program and we plan to see continual growth as Metcalfe County Schools thrive to provide all students with opportunities to think outside the box and become successful in their futures.<br />
<br />
Note: Individuals with experience or background in aviation or aeronautics are welcome to contact Eric Sexton, Jessica Miles or Henry Damron at 270-432-2481 if they would like to share their knowledge with our program students.

MCHS Students Prepare for the Future with ILPs

                MCHS students are currently working on their Individual Learning Plan (ILP). The ILP provides a wealth of knowledge for students, parents and educators. Parents are encouraged to contact the school to get your child's user name and password. This will allow you to access your child's ILP. Once you access it, please take that opportunity to sit down and discuss his/her future plans. Parents will also be able to access their child's EXPLORE, PLAN, ACT and KPREP scores. Please take time to look at those and discuss them with your child. This will also give you an idea about if your child's classes align with his/her chosen career. At the MCHS, we offer AP and APP classes, classes within a specific career path in Medicaid Nurse Aide, Agriculture, Technology, Art and Family Consumer Science.

The ILP has many features and resources that involve students on a variety of levels:

Exploring careers beginning in the 6th grade. Students complete this and update it yearly.
Finding careers that match their skills and interests. Students complete a Match Maker activity and a Skills activity that provide students with a computer generated list of careers based on how they respond to questions within the program.
Creating education plans. Every year, students enter their current classes and project their schedule for the next year.
Establishing personal goals and revisit these as they progress through school. Students must create personal short term goals and long terms goals. These are revisited and changed throughout the year as needed.
Creating, maintaining and changing resumes.
Tracking and reflecting on their community services experiences, work experiences, career-planning activities, and extra-curricular and organization activities. This is a great place to organize and keep track of all activities.
Exploring colleges and postsecondary opportunities that match their career, postsecondary and life goals.
Connecting to the KHEAA.org (Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority) Web site for help with college planning, tuition assistance information and applications. The ILP has a data base with more than 1,500 scholarships. These scholarship opportunities are located in the Financial Aid Selector. This may be an asset if your child is looking for various ways to pay for college.
Collecting personal information like assessment results, advising activities demographic information and educational history.

MCS Offers Free Admission for Students

                Metcalfe County schools is offering students an incentive to attend home events sponsored by the school district during the 2012-13 school year.

This incentive is intended to renew spirit at athletic events and to increase our fan base for our athletic teams at all home games. The free admission is only for school-sponsored games that the Metcalfe County schools host on their own home fields and courts.

There are, however, a few conditions for students to retain this privilege.

Any students in grades 9-12 may attend athletic events for free across the county unsupervised by an adult, but must abide by their school’s handbook for behavior expectations when attending athletic events.

All students in grades P-8 must be accompanied by an adult when attending high school athletic events. All students in grades P-5 must be accompanied by an adult when attending athletic events at both the middle school and high school. (Please note that there are no provisions of this kind in effect for attendance at Little League games, as those are not hosted by nor sponsored by the Metcalfe County Schools.)

Any school or district administrator may deny a student the right to remain at athletic events if their exhibited behavior at any one event leads to a suspension of these privileges for a period of time or for the remainder of the school year. Positive and respectful student behavior is expected at all times when our students are in attendance at home or away competitive athletic events. Superintendent Hurt supports and expects appropriate and positive discipline at sporting events by school and district administrators.

In essence, MCS is providing students an opportunity to grow our Hornet spirit and exhibit true pride in our athletes in the 2012-13 school year. We will evaluate the this pilot to deliver on that intent at the end of the year and make appropriate leadership decisions regarding the continuance of the program for 2013-14.

With that said, let’s all turn out and bring our families to cheer on our teams during all spring, summer, winter and fall sports. Our coaches and our children work hard to compete on behalf of the Metcalfe County Schools. I am looking forward to a successful year for all of the hornet teams we sponsor as they take the field or the court in 2012-13.

Go Hornets!

KDE Expects Drop in Proficiency Rates Under New Accountability

                The Kentucky Department of Education released information earlier this month detailing an expected decline in proficiency rates in state testing results, which will be released in the coming weeks.

Kentucky Public Schools began assessing students under a new accountability system this spring using the Kentucky Performance Rating for Educational Progress (K-PREP) assessment.

The new assessment & accountability system will be more closely aligned to the Council on Postsecondary Education’s ACT Benchmarks (18 in English, 19 in math, and 20 in reading).

“While we are anticipating seeing a decline in proficiency rates from the 2011 Kentucky Core Content Test (KCCT) to the 2012 K-PREP test,” noted Superintendent Hurt, “this does not mean that our students are declining in proficiency. It’s a different ruler to measure the same progress.”

KDE suggests that changes in proficiency could change as much as indicated below:

In Reading Proficiency:
Elementary: could drop 36%
Middle School: could drop 30%
High School: could drop 25%

In Math Proficiency:
Elementary: could drop 37%
Middle School: could drop 29%
High School: could drop 10%

Kentucky Commissioner of Education, Terry Holliday, explained in a press release by KDE that there were differences in how each accountability system measured student progress. He adds, “We should not dwell on trying to compare previous years’ data with the new results. We should focus on what we need to do to help more students be competitive, which means Kentucky will be more competitive.”

“We are expecting our students to continue to excel in state accountability, with the help and direction of teachers and administrators,” stated MCS Director of Assessment & Accountability Bennie Stephens. “However, the scores this year will be different because the measurement is different.”

Stephens explained that school districts across the state of Kentucky experienced the same kind of change a few years ago when the state moved from the Commonwealth Accountability Testing System (CATS) to KCCT. We’re simply going to see another transition year for accountability systems.

KDE will be conducting a statistical study linking the EXPLORE Assessment to K-PREP test scores this month. The results of this study will give more accurate estimates about proficiency rates in the new system.

MCS Offers Breakfast, Lunch to Elementary Students at No Charge

                With approval from the Metcalfe County Board of Education last Tuesday night, students attending any of Metcalfe County’s three elementary schools will enjoy breakfast and lunch for absolutely no charge in 2012-13.

Director of School Nutrition Beth Miller presented the Community Eligibility Option (CEO) to the Board last week, which allows all elementary students, regardless of income, to eat a free breakfast and free lunch each day.

The CEO is a program that was implemented for the 2011-2012 school year as a part of the Health Hunger Free Kids Act. It allows for meals to be provided at no cost to all students at schools that have a Direct Certified (DC) percentage of 40% or greater (students identified as receiving federal assistance).

Edmonton Elementary (52% DC), North Metcalfe Elementary (45% DC), and Summer Shade Elementary (49% DC) will take part in this program next year.

“This program will impact approximately 845 students,” stated Miller. “That’s a huge help to parents in this community. Students are more alert in class when they have had a good meal. We understand that many of our kids walk through the front doors in the morning hungry; it is my goal, shared by a wonderful staff at each school, to not let those kids go back home hungry. This program helps us do that by relieving the burden some families may feel in coming up with money for breakfast and lunch.”

The school district’s Food Service Program will be reimbursed for meals based on a formula percentage of free, reduced, and full-price meals being served. Charges still apply for ala carte items and adult meals.

“We try to do absolutely everything we can to be a service to the students in this community, facilitating an environment that is rich for instruction and learning,” said Superintendent Patricia Hurt. “This program facilitated by Food Service takes us another step into doing just that.”

Metcalfe County Schools will evaluate the program at the end of the 2012-13 school year to determine its effectiveness. If the pilot at the elementary schools goes well, the program may be extended to include Metcalfe County Middle School and/or Metcalfe County High School.

Metcalfe County BOE Meets in Special-Called Session

The Metcalfe County Board of Education met in special-called session on Monday night. The meeting was special-called due to postponement from the week before to allow district staff time to work on allocations requests.<br />
<br />
Mrs. Anita Love was recognized as being the Improving Lives High School Educator of the Year. Mrs. Love has spent countless hours building the library program at the high school, initiating a number of ideas to increase the use of the resources it has to offer.<br />
<br />
Director of Assessments and Accountability for Learning, who sat in for Superintendent Hurt in her absence, gave an update on recent legislature that will impact our school district over the next several years. Stephens also brought attention to the district's End-of-Year Events that are scheduled, highlighting graduation commencements and awards ceremonies. These dates are available on our district website at the "Master Calendar" page.<br />
<br />
The Metcalfe 6th Grade Center and Metcalfe County High School gave a demonstration of how their students are learning. Students from both schools recently took a trip to Western Kentucky University where they had hands-on experience dissecting rats and making aspirin. This group of students then came back to the 6th Grade Center, where they taught peers how to dissect rats of their own. During the meeting, students explained how this trip had benefited them before bringing out a rat that had been dissected to show the Board.<br />
<br />
Other items that were discussed and approved included School Allocations and Section 7 Requests for the 2012-13 school year; three change orders for the Primary Center Project (including relocating a sewer line, removal of unsuitable soil, and extending a storm drain); 2012 United Way Grant; surplus of technology equipment; updated technology plan; auditor contract for 2012; bids on spare bus parts, tires, and fuel & oil; and the renewal of membership to the Green River Regional Educational Cooperative. The Board also discussed participation in the KSBA Self-Evaluation of Board Members before tabling it to give members time to read over the material presented. The item will be re-visited at next month's meeting.

Students Collect Books for Summer Reading

Last week at SSE, the First Grade Class worked on a Community Service Project. They challenged each class of students to bring in gently used books (or new books) to donate to their Book Drive. On a daily basis the students collected books from each classroom, tallied the classroom totals, marked it on a bar graph chart in our hallway, sorted the books based on the reading level (using AR or other online program to determine reading level), and have reported the daily results.<br />
<br />
The original goal of the program was to collect about 100 books to then be sent home with SSE kids this summer to encourage reading since this will be one of the longest summer breaks we have had in a long while. Each child who is referred by their teacher will receive 5 books on their reading level to be read over the summer. Research says that all a child needs to read is at least 5 books on their independent reading level to maintain the reading over the summer.<br />
<br />
This has been a wonderful learning experience. Along with the first grade class goal of collecting 100 books, they were awarding the winning class an ice cream party as a thank you for their efforts. The bar graph chart that the first graders charted the results on was developed with the goal of getting 100 books in mind. However, after the first day they had collected 220 books and every day each class out did themselves and other classrooms. The final tally is 1,965 books, with second grade winning the Ice Cream Party with a total of 697 books.<br />
<br />
Mrs. Christie Anderson and her first grade class have been so overwhelmed with the support that they are considering opening up the referrals to the other schools in the district. We want all Metcalfe County kids having books to read over the summer and we are excited to be able to supply the books. Our hope will be to continue this next year and those same books will be re-donated along with others so that more children can learn and grow from their reading and community service giving.

To enhance learning, students from NME’s fourth and fifth grade classes traveled to Shaker Village and the State Capitol Building. Students learned about the culture, everyday life and religion of a Shake community. They were given the opportunity to watch how brooms are made and even participated in games that Shaker children would play during the evening hours after finishing their chores.<br />
<br />
At the Capitol Building, students learned about the history of the building and the government. They learned about the roles and responsibilities of the Senate and House of Representatives.

Mr. David McKinney visits North Metcalfe on a routine basis to provide instruction about agriculture. Recently he worked with our 5th grade in planting cabbage in a small garden adjacent to our building. Once planted the students now take responsibility of watering the cabbage regularly. Students use this real world experience to learn about taking care of plants, fruits and vegetables and the importance of their responsibilities.

Funding Approved for Ralph Edwards Road

Superintendent Patricia Hurt received notice from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet earlier this week that her request for reimbursement to widen and blacktop Ralph Edwards Road has been approved.

Superintendent Hurt made the request to Greg Meredith with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet in February, after having been turned down for funding by the Edmonton City Council. The request was made to the Edmonton City Council because local Board funds cannot be used by statute to pave a city street. The request included widening the existing road by four feet among other necessary tasks, and was quoted to cost just over $10,000. The state’s assistance in proactively correcting a potential safety issue is crucial to the safety of our students and staff.

“I am appreciative of everyone involved in helping make this happen: Mayor Garrett, the Edmonton City Council, and the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet,” commented Superintendent Hurt. “I know budgets are tight everywhere, but I appreciate the consideration and assistance that all have given for the safety of Metcalfe County students.”

New Advisory Members Named at MCHS

Commissioner of Education Terry Holliday recently named three teachers and two parents to the Metcalfe County High School Advisory Council.

The school council has been appointed by Holliday to serve in an advisory capacity. This newly appointed body of parents and teachers will take their seats on the Council on July 1 of this year. The school council has been instated at the high school as a transitioning body with the hopes of restoring a true Site-Based Decision Making Council with authority to govern in the usual manner upon completion of the school improvement process.

The former SBDM council was removed in 2010 by state officials as part of a three-year recovery process for Metcalfe County High School. The end of the 2012-13 school year will also mark the end of this three-year period. At that time, MCHS will hopefully once again become a self-sufficient entity of Metcalfe County Schools without assistance from grant funding or state-assigned recovery staff. This, however, is dependent upon MCHS meeting their new goals established by the Kentucky Department of Education under the new accountability system for two consecutive years.

“This is a big step in the right direction for Metcalfe County High School,” stated Superintendent Patricia Hurt. “The High School has begun a rigorous turn-around over the past two years, and that work will continue into next school year with the help of the state’s Educational Recovery team we currently have. When the Educational Recovery Team leaves MCHS, we expect Metcalfe County High School to continue to improve with the internal resources and capacity we have built at the school and district levels. MCHS is becoming capable of picking up the responsibility for their continued improvement over time, and I look forward to their continued progress.”

Commissioner Holliday requested a list of nominees for the new Advisory Council from the district in February. Holliday selected five members which include the following individuals to serve on the advisory council: Valarie Lobb (teacher), Brett Meredith (teacher), Joshua Phelps (teacher), Matt South (parent), and Julie Parsons (parent).

While moving toward re-instating a fully-functioning SBDM council for the 2013-14 school year, next year this council will only serve in an advisory capacity. The council will meet with Principal Kelly Bell and Superintendent Patricia Hurt on a monthly basis. The council will make suggestions and recommendations to Superintendent Hurt, who will continue to make decisions for the school’s and its students’ best interests.

“I am excited about the improvement we have seen at MCHS,” commented Dr. Ronda Dunn, Educational Recovery Director, “and simply welcome all new stakeholders at the table.” Both Superintendent Hurt and Principal Bell look forward to working with this advisory. Their goal is to rebuild a strong decision-making process over the next school year and, together, prepare for success in the future.

Members of the Advisory Council will attend an orientation on May 1 in preparation to take their seat on the Council effective July 1.

January 2012 TAG Team Events

January proved to be a very exciting and challenging TAG Team event. The morning session involved building bridges, while the afternoon offered a session called "3-2-1 Blast Off."<br />
<br />
We began each day by looking at the 3 basic shapes that are commonly used in the structures of bridges. Rectangles, triangles, and arches were determined to be the most popular. Following that, pictures of bridges within Metcalfe County were displayed and the students took turns trying to identify the location of each of the bridges. The structures of the bridges in Metcalfe County were discussed.
<br /><br />

After gaining some background knowledge on bridge building, the students were given the problem solving task of building a bridge by only using the 100 popsicle sticks, toothpicks, and wood glue that was at each station. The students worked in pairs to design and build a bridge for the afternoon activity, "Whose bridge holds the most weight?"

Metcalfe County Schools Celebrates Digital Learning Day, February 1

Several weeks ago, Library Media Specialists from Metcalfe County High School and Metcalfe County Middle School approached Superintendent Patricia Hurt with information about a digital library to implement in the Metcalfe County Schools.<br />
<br />
At the beginning of the Spring semester, the two schools opened the Metcalfe County Digital Library for use by students and staff. The digital library was later opened for use by the elementary schools in the county.<br />
<br />
On Wednesday, February 1, Metcalfe County Schools took part in the Digital Learning Day, a nationwide celebration of innovative teaching and learning through digital media and technology that engages students and provides them with a right, personalized educational experience.<br />
<br />
During the school day on Wednesday, two students from Metcalfe County High School and two students from Metcalfe County Middle School visited fourth and fifth grade classrooms across the district to demonstrate how to access, download, and read books from the new digital library. <br />
<br />
Additionally, during the afternoon, Metcalfe County High School hosted an open house for parents, staff, and student in the library where technical support staff demonstrated and assisted in downloaded books to personal computers and personal handheld devices.

January is School Board Recognition Month

Like the students in the Metcalfe County School District, the members of its Board of Education must do their homework. This means sifting through complicated test data and financial reports while keeping abreast of the latest requirements handed down from state and federal governments, to name just a few “subjects.”<br />
<br />
Chairman Joey Shive, Vice-Chair Tim Brown, and members Karen Tudor, Lakettia O’Leary, and Donnie Perry conduct business at one or more meetings monthly, but you’ll often find them at ball games, school celebrations and civic events because they are the link between the school system and the community.<br />
<br />
These responsibilities and others are the reason Kentucky and other states set aside the month of January to thank local school board members during School Board Recognition Month.<br />
<br />
These five members of the Metcalfe County Board of Education oversee a $17.5 million budget and make decisions about multimillion-dollar building projects. “All this is done in the face of shrinking state and federal dollars for education and tough economic times locally,” stated Superintendent Patricia Hurt. “But beyond those “macro” duties, they also make certain the individual child in the Metcalfe County school district gets what he or she needs to successfully learn in school and beyond.”<br />
<br />
So why do they do it? “As a mother of three children, to serve on the school board was an opportunity for me to be a part of the educational system,” noted Board Member Lakettia O’Leary. “I had been a PTO officer, volunteer, FRYSC committee member, and was serving on the Site Based Council at Edmonton Elementary. Since appointment to the board in 2007, I have had the opportunity to be a part of all the schools in the county. The students, faculty and staff make me proud to say I’m from Metcalfe County. The top priority of a board member is student success, and my prayer is that my decisions help that to be accomplished.”<br />
<br />
The Metcalfe County Schools will publicly recognize its Board of Education during the regularly scheduled Board Meeting on Monday, January 23, for its work in Improving Lives for the students of Metcalfe County. We also encourage our community to share a word of appreciation with your Board Member for their unwavering commitment to bring the best possible education to the students of Metcalfe County.

During November’s TAG Team program, the students learned about qualities and characteristics of great leaders. All students brainstormed vocabulary related to leadership and developed an acrostic for LEADERSHIP. From the acrostics, each group developed meaningful definitions for leadership. The students also gained insight to individual strengths and weaknesses toward leadership by doing personal inventories and participating in many activities that promoted positive leadership abilities.
