MCS adds Nurse Practitioner

New to our school district this year is the addition of a full time, on site, nurse practitioner.  We are able to provide this service through a partnership with TJ Samson Regional Health Services.  We have tried to spread the word via social media, back to school bashes, back pack express, and other means but we understand some of you still may have missed the information.  Please see the links below for complete information about the program and for all relevant permission forms. Don’t hesitate to contact your child’s school should you have questions.

Board Meeting Summary

A summary of the September 2016 meeting of the Metcalfe County Board of Education.

Title IX Meeting

Metcalfe County Athletics will go though a Title IX 5 year Audit on Sept 27th.   Every five years, each KHSAA member school is subject to an audit on a rotation basis.  This is our year to be audited. This is an all day review of all high school athletic programs.  There will be a public meeting at 3 pm in the High School Library for anyone that wants to attend.

Message from Superintendent Lile

On Thursday afternoon September 8th, I received a call that any school official hopes they never receive. A Metcalfe County school bus had been involved in a serious accident. With little more information than the location, I and several other district administrators rushed to the site. Immediately upon arrival we realized the gravity of the situation. Upon finding that our students and driver were not seriously injured we implemented district procedures to notify parents.

Just as it became apparent our students were safe, the realization set in that the other victim of the crash was not. All of us in the Metcalfe County School System mourn with the Thurmond family the loss of a mother, a wife, a school parent, and a valued member of our community. Words will never express the sense of emptiness we feel at this time.There are many organizations and entities that are deserving of recognition for their call of duty during this event. These include;

Metcalfe County School Bus Accident

September 8, 2016

Dr. Benny Lile

Metcalfe County Schools

(270) 432-3171

At approximately 3 p.m. on Thursday, September 8, 2016, Metcalfe County School bus no. 89 was involved in an accident on Hwy. 1243 about 2 miles out of Edmonton, Ky.

The school bus was travelling northbound when another vehicle collided with the bus head-on.

The bus driver, David Holley, executed all emergency evacuation procedures and was able to get all of the children safely off the bus.

Holley was transporting 34 children.  Sixteen students were transported by ambulances to TJ Samson Community Hospital in Glasgow, Ky.  Eighteen students were picked up at the scene by parents or guardians. Some parents chose to transport their child to the hospital by private means.  It doesn’t appear the students suffered any serious injuries.

District personnel met first responders at the scene and at the hospital.

We would like to thank Penny Groce, a Metcalfe County resident, who helped care for the students at her home until help arrived.  We want to express our gratitude to Holley who acted swiftly and properly in a critical situation.  We also want to thank all first responders who were on the scene.

August 2016 School Board Meeting

The Metcalfe County Board of Education met in regular session, Monday, August 8, 2016

No Supply List

Again for the 2016-17 school year, Metcalfe County Schools will have no supply lists and no student fees. Students will be expected to have paper and pencil, but beyond that, the school will provide other needed items. Students are welcome to bring their favorite folder, binder, or any other item, but there is no requirement for such.

2016 Strategic Plan

In late 2015 over 50 staff, community members, parents, and students divided into five work groups and began work on what would ultimately be a strategic plan. This plan would set the direction for Metcalfe County Schools for the immediate future. At the June 2016 board meeting the Metcalfe County Board of Education approved the final version of the plan. The plan is not a requirement of KDE and is non-binding.  A strategic plan brings a variety of constituencies together to help focus on items of importance that will build stronger schools and communities.
